Rediscovering Life after Retirement

Thankful Thursday 09.23.2021 & More

Dear ones, it’s time for Thankful Thursday 09.23.2021. Joining Rebecca Jo at Knit by God’s Hand and Jennifer at All 4 Boys in sharing the hosting responsibilities for the Thankful Thursday series. Some weeks, you might discover posts from all 3 of us, other Thursdays, it might just be one of us hosting. But whatever the case, YOU are always welcome to join us!!

THANKFUL THURSDAY 09.23.2021

It’s been another pretty good week at our house. How are things at yours? Fall as arrived. We have a forecast of rain. PC has a 3-day weekend. We get to sleep in a little tomorrow to kick things off. Here are some of the other things that were good in my world this week.

COMING TO YOU STRAIGHT FROM MY GRATITUDE JOURNAL

For my Thankful Thursday posts, I usually share the ‘gratefuls’ I’ve listed in my gratitude journal over the week or month, whatever length of time has elapsed since my last Thankful Thursday post. It’s only been a week since my last Thankful Thursday post, here. Here are some of the things I’ve been grateful this week.

  • long desert walks
  • homemade shrimp egg rolls
  • up early for quiet time several days
  • neighbor returned a package addressed to me that the mailman delivered to them
  • walking up McKelligon Canyon road for the first time in months
  • hot tub soak
  • quiet days at home
  • bedtime walks
  • delicious breakfast at a new to us restaurant, Mamacita’s
  • church message on handling emotions
  • PC took photos for me
  • Sunday afternoon nap
  • Bible journaling
  • feeling clear headed
  • Cady’s new phone allows us to chat a lot more
  • truly enjoying blog reading
  • being with Lauren, Lucia and Camila
  • Kevin helping Mom when she was distraught
  • PC giving me a big kiss when he got home
  • Lucia’s beautiful drawing
  • meeting my StepBet goals and won a piece of the pot
  • accomplished a lot, good mix of work and play
  • Lucia’s medical imaging came back normal, now to figure out why she isn’t eating
  • Lauren and Lucia created an altar for dia de los muertos like I do each year
  • El Paso has reached herd immunity - something I had never heard of this time 2 years ago

Final Thoughts

Don’t know about you but this world feels pretty pretty upside down right now to me. Spent the week watching the tragic details unfold of Gabby Petito’s disappearance. Thought of how devastated I would be to lose one of my daughters. I cannot imagine the pain.

Watched the population of hopeful Haitian immigrants increase under the bridge in Del Rio, Texas. Then watched it decrease almost as quickly. Some of the Haitians being brought to El Paso. Our town has a huge tent city on Ft. Bliss for immigrants coming across the southern border, a settlement for Afghan refugees on the Doña Ana range, and now Haitian immigrants are being brought to El Paso. That’s a lot for this big little town. Prayers for the children. Prayers for the Border Patrol officers.

While El Paso has reached herd immunity as of this week in regards to Covid, I have to wonder how allowing unvaccinated immigrants and refugees into our country is going to affect that. We are asking Americans to vaccinate but allowing thousands of unvaccinated people into our country. How does that make sense? God help and protect our country.

Today there was a mass shooting in Memphis, Tennessee. My hometown. I held my breath while texting my brother and his kids, my niece and nephew, who both live in Memphis, to be sure Shelby and Jacob were safe. They were. I am so thankful. The Kroger grocery where the shootings occurred is across the street from one of the stores my niece manages. Prayers for the victims and their families.

I am thankful my family is safe, that I will sleep in my own bed tonight.

Hodgepodge

Every Tuesday my friend Joyce who blogs at From This Side of the Pond poses 5 thoughtful questions for her readers to consider and respond to on the following day. Her questions are fun to ponder and always make me stop for a moment to reflect.

From this Side of the Pond

1. It’s fall y’all! Officially that is and in the northern hemisphere only, so if you’re visiting from down under happy spring! Does it feel like fall where you live? Does it look like fall aka are the leaves beginning to change? What is your favorite fall color? Scent? Flavor? Craziest thing. We were having record highs last week. Temps in the upper 90s. And then on the first day of fall, they dropped into the 80s. That morning was even chilly!!

Here in El Paso, fall looks like longer, deeper shadows in the afternoons, an extended golden hour in the early evening, some rain, a lot of wind - especially in October. My favorite fall color would probably be pumpkin, spice, cinnamon…some variety of a burnt orange. My favorite fall fragrance would be something like Bath and Body Works cinnamon and clove buds. Like the scent of a baking pumpkin pie. Favorite flavor…spice. Spicy chili. Pumpkin pie spice.

2. What’s something you’re not? Lazy.

3. Share a favorite quote related to fall and tell us why it’s a favorite.

4. Besides Thanksgiving, what’s your favorite fall meal? Probably the season’s first bowl of chili. With a side of honey cornbread.

5. Share a favorite photo you took last fall. Took this photo last October at the pumpkin patch. We were probably out there a total of 30 minutes…we were so afraid of Covid!! Practically ran through the pumpkins, picked out several to take home, snapped a few pictures and jumped back in the car. We are planning to go again when Brennyn comes. Hope we can stay a little longer this time.

6. Insert your own random thought here. Yes, it is.

Such a great gratitude list. I feel so sorry for the Haitians, but I too am upset about the border being open to all these unvaccinated people and the hypocrisy of forcing Americans to get vaccinated or lose their jobs, but they do not, drives me mad!

Maybe we should offer vaccinations to those that are coming to our borders for help. Happy fall!

I have been heartbroken about the Gabby Petito case as well. I cannot imagine what her family is feeling. The world feels pretty upside down to me as well - I find myself trying to hold on to anything that feels normal.

What a wonderful gratitude list! With so many horrible things happening in the world it’s so important to take notice of the little things that make us happy!

That is great about the herd immunity. Our numbers are way down here in St. Louis again. I hope it stays that way through the holidays. Ohh, you have me craving a hot bowl of chili right now and cornbread!
